A contemporary ensemble around Gerrit Rietveld’s only office building
Along the Willemsvaart in Zwolle, the new VanWonen Headquarters rises beside the only office building ever designed by Gerrit Rietveld. Completed in 1958 for Schokbeton, the listed national monument is internationally recognised as an exceptional example of Rietveld’s architectural thinking. Rather than competing with this remarkable building, the new headquarters enters into a dialogue with it, transforming the site into a coherent architectural ensemble.
The project is rooted in a profound respect for cultural heritage. Instead of treating the monument as an isolated object, the design reinterprets the essential principles of Rietveld’s work—clarity of composition, spatial freedom, autonomous architectural elements and the careful articulation of structure and detail. The result is a contemporary building that honours the monument without imitation, allowing both buildings to reinforce one another.
Positioned at a respectful distance, the new headquarters is conceived as a transparent pavilion within the landscape. A generous roof plane, slender columns and deep overhangs create an open and flexible working environment, while a continuous elevated walkway gives the building the appearance of floating above the ground. Together with the restored Rietveld building, the new volume defines a shared courtyard that becomes the social and spatial heart of the campus.
The workplace is organised around openness and collaboration. Flexible office floors, meeting facilities and informal gathering spaces replace conventional departmental layouts, encouraging interaction across the organisation while offering long-term adaptability for future ways of working.
Landscape forms an integral part of the architectural concept. Existing trees are preserved and complemented by new planting, creating a biodiverse garden that connects the two buildings into one coherent composition. Green roofs, generous terraces and carefully framed views extend the landscape throughout the project, strengthening the relationship between architecture and nature.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the design. A highly efficient building envelope, energy-conscious climate systems and extensive green roofs create a healthy, future-proof working environment with low operational energy demand. At the same time, the project demonstrates that the most enduring form of sustainability lies in building upon existing cultural value. By giving new meaning to Rietveld’s monument while creating a contemporary workplace for VanWonen, the project shows how architectural heritage can become a catalyst for future development rather than a constraint.
Together, the historic office and the new pavilion establish a new urban landmark at the entrance to Zwolle’s Spoorzone—an ensemble where heritage, landscape and contemporary architecture come together to shape a workplace for the next generation.
