Sterckshof Castle, Antwerp

Sterckshof Castle in Deurne, set within Antwerp’s Rivierenhof park, is being transformed into a new cultural destination dedicated to art, heritage and public life. Neutelings Riedijk Architects, in collaboration with restoration specialists Steenmeijer architecten, is restoring and adapting the historic castle while introducing a contemporary museum extension.

The history of Sterckshof dates back to the 13th century. Over time, the site evolved from a fortified estate into a Renaissance residence and Baroque country house. After centuries of decline, the castle was reconstructed between 1928 and 1936 by architect Jaak Alfons Van der Gucht, based on historical documents and surviving foundations. Today, this layered history forms the starting point for the transformation.

The design carefully balances restoration and renewal. The neo-Renaissance character of the castle is strengthened, while valuable historic interiors are restored and adapted for contemporary use. The courtyards are reactivated as public spaces, reconnecting the different parts of the complex and opening the castle to visitors.

To accommodate the technical and spatial requirements of a contemporary museum without compromising the silhouette of the historic building, a new sunken extension is introduced within the contours of the original moat. Conceived as a subtle addition to the existing ensemble, it provides new exhibition spaces and museum facilities while preserving the castle as the dominant architectural presence.

The renewed Sterckshof will accommodate a museum with an international Pop Art collection, including works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, alongside spaces for temporary exhibitions, artists-in-residence and cultural events. A restaurant-café, guest accommodation and flexible public spaces broaden the programme beyond that of a conventional museum.

The transformation also focuses on the long-term sustainability of the monument. The existing building is upgraded to improve its energy performance, while new interventions are carefully integrated into the historic fabric and surrounding landscape.

By combining restoration, adaptive reuse and a precise contemporary intervention, Sterckshof becomes a place where different periods remain legible and reinforce one another. The project gives the castle a new public life while preserving its distinctive presence within the landscape of Rivierenhof
