Realisation agreement signed for new VanWonen Headquarters in Zwolle

Neutelings Riedijk Architects is looking forward to the next phase of the new headquarters for VanWonen in Zwolle, following the signing of a construction agreement between VanWonen and contractor Dons & Troost during the Provada real estate fair.

The new office building will be located alongside the iconic Rietveld Office, a listed national monument designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the late 1950s.

It’s great news that we’re now starting construction on our new office. Given the growth of our company, we really need this expansion. And thanks to the beautiful design, we’ll soon have a stunning new office next to Gerrit Rietveld’s national monument. Together, they’ll form a beautiful gateway along the Willemsvaart to downtown Zwolle.

Says: Alfred Bolks, CEO at VanWonen

The design by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, presented by Michiel Riedijk, carefully balances contemporary architecture with the presence of the historic Rietveld building. Set at an appropriate distance from the monument, the new office is conceived as a transparent and elegant pavilion. Deep roof overhangs provide shade and character, while a continuous elevated walkway gives the building the appearance of floating above the landscape.

Positioned at the edge of the Willemskwartier development within Zwolle’s Spoorzone district, the project will provide a future-proof workplace for VanWonen’s growing organisation while strengthening the entrance to the city centre along the Willemsvaart.

The programme includes flexible workspaces, meeting facilities and a 120 m² auditorium for larger gatherings. A semi-sunken parking level accommodates bicycles and cars, while the existing Rietveld building will be transformed into a representative reception and meeting centre, complemented by a dedicated studio space for VanWonenID.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the building will feature an energy-efficient climate system, green roofs planted with perennial vegetation and flowering grasses, and a landscape design by Peter Verkade Landschapsarchitect. Together, the historic monument and the new office form a coherent ensemble that combines architectural heritage, contemporary working environments and a strong connection to nature.

Construction is scheduled to begin before the summer holidays, with completion expected in 2027.
