Historic Milestone: Tender phase launched for the new Amsterdam Museum
On 20 November 2024, a significant milestone was reached in the heart of Amsterdam: the launch of the tender phase for the renovation and transformation of the monumental Amsterdam Museum. This moment, celebrated in the museum’s historic courtyard alongside the Amsterdam Museum and the City of Amsterdam, marks the next step in an important project that bridges the rich history of the former Civic Orphanage with the forward-looking vision of a modern city museum. The tender phase follows a favorable ruling by the Council of State (Raad van State) on the building permit.
A modern and sustainable city museum
The renewed Amsterdam Museum, designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects in collaboration with TPAHG Architects, ABT, Deerns, and Pieters Bouwtechniek, focuses on accessibility, sustainability and creating flexible and appropriate museum space from very large to intimately small. The design transforms the historic building into a future-ready city museum with a welcoming entrance, an intuitive museum route, and larger, more flexible exhibition spaces. Sustainability takes center stage with fossil-free systems, material reuse, and a green roof, while the building will no longer use fossil.
A space for the city and its stories
The renewed museum addresses the need for an inclusive and accessible meeting place in the heart of Amsterdam. Formerly closed doors and windows will open to the city, and the courtyards will become serene spaces for both visitors and local residents. The new ‘Stadshal’ in the heart will be a publicly accessible area featuring hospitality services, a museum shop, and free (ticket-less) public programming. This is where the museum experience begins and ends, leading visitors through a seamless route of historic rooms and new galleries where Amsterdam’s stories come to life.
A cultural beacon for the future
This redevelopment ensures that the Amsterdam Museum is not only a place to celebrate the city’s rich history but also a platform for contemporary creators and a laboratory for new ideas. Artists will have the opportunity to work as artists-in-residence, creating new collections, while technology such as geothermal energy storage and circular construction methods contribute to a sustainable, future-proof building.
A unique collaboration
Neutelings Riedijk Architects is proud to be part of this transformative project. Together with our partners, we are shaping a city museum that honors the past while embracing the challenges of tomorrow. The new Amsterdam Museum will become a vibrant hub for culture, education, and connection, where the stories the people of Amsterdam take center stage.
