Neutelings Riedijk Architects Opens Sustainable P+R Facility at Naturalis

Designed as an integral part of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the new built parking structure emphasizes spatial coherence, public quality, and long-term adaptability

With the opening of the new P+R parking facility at Naturalis, Neutelings Riedijk Architects further strengthen the accessibility and sustainability of the city of Leiden.

The facility provides nearly 600 parking spaces and serves as a key park-and-ride hub for both museum visitors and visitors to Leiden’s historic city centre. In its architecture and material expression, the building deliberately relates to the adjacent museum: its layered composition and corten steel façades create a clear visual unity, while façade planting and trees will allow the volume to increasingly merge with the surrounding landscape over time.

Sustainability is a fundamental component of the design. Rainwater is collected and reused for the irrigation of greenery and the future Oertuin, while 454 photovoltaic panels contribute to the building’s energy supply. The façade artwork In the Eyes of Sibylla Merian by artist Giny Vos gives the building a strong public and cultural presence, reinforcing the theme of biodiversity.

The parking facility demonstrates how Neutelings Riedijk Architects approach infrastructure as an integral part of the urban and cultural context. By combining functionality with architectural expression, sustainability and art, the project results in a building that strengthens its surroundings and is able to evolve with future ambitions.
