Trophy Règles d’or de l’Urbanisme, édition 2024

This project combines the charm of industrial heritage with modern, sustainable architecture and houses a diverse mix of offices, stores, and hospitality. The renovation of Gare Maritime maintained the original structure while introducing innovative solutions such as green roofs, integrated water collection systems, and energy-efficient technologies, contributing to a more sustainable urban landscape.

The multifunctional space stimulates economic activity and creates a dynamic environment for businesses and visitors. The integration of open spaces and walkways connects the site to surrounding neighborhoods, promotes social interaction and makes it a pleasant destination for both work and leisure.

Gare Maritime not only offers 45,000 m2 of office, retail and restaurant space within the 100.000 m2 large transformed former freight railwaystation. The central area houses a large Food Court and hosts small- and large-scale events ranging from lectures, networking meetings, business events, book markets, art fairs, classical concerts, rave parties and sports tournaments such as the World Padel Open. Partly because of this, Gare Maritime is a catalyst for the development of surrounding neighborhoods and for the image of Brussels on a local, national and global level.

Gare Maritiem has been declared the winner. Michiel Riedijk receives the trophy.

Gare Maritime reflects a successful redevelopment of an urban area, strengthening both economic and social values. Gare Maritime is a leading international example of how historic sites can be transformed into modern hubs of commercial and administrative activity, making it a deserved winner of the Prix Règles d’Or’.
